Review Policy

Applies to: reviews and other user-submitted review content
Last updated: August 20, 2026

NC Homeowners Guide aims to make reviews useful to homeowners while treating businesses fairly. Our review policy focuses on genuine experiences, transparency, moderation, and clear handling of conflicts of interest.

Our review standard

Reviews should describe a genuine experience with a business, contractor, or service. NC Homeowners Guide does not permit businesses to purchase positive reviews, knowingly submit fabricated customer experiences, or use reviews to mislead homeowners.

Who may submit a review

A reviewer should have a real basis for describing the experience. This may include being the homeowner, customer, property manager, or another person directly involved with the project or service.

We may request additional information when needed to evaluate authenticity, relevance, or a reported conflict of interest. We are not obligated to publish every submission.

What reviews should include

  • Firsthand information about the service or project.
  • Specific, relevant details that may help another homeowner understand the experience.
  • Accurate descriptions of communication, scheduling, workmanship, professionalism, billing, or project outcome.
  • Fair language that distinguishes facts from personal opinion.

Content we may reject or remove

NC Homeowners Guide may moderate, reject, edit for limited formatting purposes, or remove review content that includes:

  • Fabricated or misleading experiences.
  • Spam, duplicate submissions, or promotional content disguised as a review.
  • Threats, harassment, hateful or abusive language.
  • Personal information that should not be published publicly.
  • Claims that appear unrelated to a real customer experience.
  • Undisclosed conflicts of interest, including a business reviewing itself or a competitor.
  • Content submitted in exchange for undisclosed compensation or incentives.
  • Material that may violate law or another person’s rights.

Incentivized reviews

Businesses should not offer payment, discounts, gifts, or other benefits in exchange for a positive review on NC Homeowners Guide. If a review was encouraged through an incentive that could affect how readers interpret it, that relationship should be disclosed.

Business responses

When response features are available, businesses may be allowed to respond to reviews. Responses should remain professional, relevant, and respectful of customer privacy. A response does not give a business the right to demand removal of criticism simply because it is negative.

Disputes and removal requests

A business that believes a review is false, fraudulent, abusive, or affected by a conflict of interest may contact us and identify the specific review and reason for the request. We may ask both sides for supporting information. We do not promise a particular outcome and may leave disputed opinions published when we cannot independently establish that they violate this policy.

Negative does not automatically mean prohibited. A critical review may remain published if it appears to describe a genuine experience and otherwise follows this policy.

Reviews are not endorsements

User reviews represent the views of the people who submit them. They are not guarantees, warranties, or endorsements by NC Homeowners Guide. Homeowners should independently evaluate contractors, verify important business information, and obtain a clear written scope before hiring.

How our commercial relationships affect reviews

Advertising, featured listings, qualified leads, or other commercial relationships do not give a business the right to purchase a positive review or control user feedback. For more information, see our Advertising Disclosure and Editorial Policy.
